Scaling Workouts for YOUR Goals

Scaling isn't failing

Modifying a workout isn't taking the easy way out.

Think of scaling like a game.  You and your coach consider your experience, fitness level, injuries or limitations, goals, confidence, energy, stress and life circumstances at that moment.

The workout on the board is a starting point. Your job as an athlete is to know what you’re working toward and choose a version that helps you get there.

Scaling might mean using a lighter weight, changing a movement, reducing reps, or adjusting the pace. If your goal is to build strength for long hikes, you may choose a load that lets you move well through every rep. If you’re learning a new skill, you may slow down and practice the basics. Both are purposeful training.

Your coach can explain the workout’s intent and help you find options. You bring the information only you know: your goals, how you feel today, and whether the choice you made is helping you progress. Tell your coach what you’re aiming for, then work together on a plan.

Before you start, ask yourself: What am I trying to get out of this workout? Can I maintain good movement? Does this choice support my bigger goal?

The best version of a workout is the one that moves you forward—inside the gym and out on your next adventure.
